Students in Kingswood Community College are undergoing the new Junior Cycle Science course that was reshaped under the JCT reform. It is a Core subject in Kingswood as we recognise the strong and growing presence of Science in our world. We also recognise the future dependencies our students will have on a strong foundation of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, maths) education.
It is a highly practical and hands on subject. The need for students to develop an enquiry based learning skills and the benefits of active learning are well met in science. We aim to investigate and experiment as much as possible so we can reinforce the learning of theory work with physical examples.
Science club meets every Thursday after school for an hour. Activities in science club are varied and include experiments, making videos, making displays for around the school, projects and planting and growing vegetables. We also organise events for science and engineering week. Next year, the science club hope to enter a project for the BT young scientist exhibition.
